OECD’s Critical Thinking Rubric: Process and Product The OECD´s rubrics helps teachers assess both what students produce and how they think. It separates the product (the final work, such as a report or presentation) from the process (how students explored the problem, tested ideas, and used feedback). This means a student can show strong critical thinking even if the final product is not perfect. The rubric has four levels, from Dormant to Outstanding. These levels measure how visible critical thinking is, not how intelligent a student is. For the product, higher levels include clear arguments, strong evidence, different perspectives, and an awareness of limitations. Lower levels rely on simple or common ideas with little analysis. For the process, higher levels show that students consider different approaches, compare ideas, and remain open to feedback. Lower levels usually focus on only one solution without exploring alternatives. The main message is simple: critical thinking becomes clearer when teachers look at both sides. If only the product is rewarded, students may aim for polish over reflection. If the process is also valued, students have a reason to question, revise, and learn.
