An elementary public school has implemented a bilingual education program that integrates English instruction into regular subjects, such as Mathematics, for approximately 400 students. This approach aims to provide students from low-income communities with access to quality education, focusing on second language acquisition. The project seeks to develop students’ cognitive, social, and cultural skills, promoting the formation of global and intercultural citizens while valuing the local context and Brazilian culture. The school has addressed this demand with pedagogical strategies that respect different forms of linguistic expression, such as the use of “local English” and the adaptation of teaching practices to the students’ socioeconomic and cultural profiles.
