But it 78 is time for the sporting action to take centre 79 stage. These are the Games of the 31st 80 Olympiad but are the 28th to be held as those 81 in 1916, 1940 and 1944 did not take place 82 because of war. 83 The Games - held in South America for 84 the first time - officially take place between 5 85 and 21 August, but they have actually already 86 started. The opening ceremony is at midnight 87 BST on Friday night but the action kicked off 88 two days ago with the women's football. 89 Defending Olympic men's tennis champion 90 Andy Murray will be Great Britain's flag bearer 91 inside Rio's Maracana stadium on Friday. An 92 estimated three billion people will watch the 93 ceremony which has taken five years to 94 produce and includes 300 dancers, 5,000 95 volunteers and 12,000 costumes. Brazilian 96 supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Briton Dame 97 Judi Dench are confirmed to have roles in the 98 production before the 207 competing teams 99 take part in the Parade of Nations. 100 There will be 10,500 athletes from a 101 record 207 teams competing in Rio, including 102 the Refugee Olympic Team, while it will be the 103 first time Kosovo and South Sudan have taken 104 part in the Games. The Refugee Olympic Team 105 will compete under the Olympic flag and has 106 10 members - five from South Sudan, two 107 from Syria, two from DR Congo and one from 108 Ethiopia. With 554 athletes, the United States 109 has the largest Olympic team, but 100m 110 runner Etimoni Timuani is the only athlete from 111 the South Pacific nation of Tuvalu. The Rio 112 Games will be the first to feature Olympians 113 born since the year 2000 - and the youngest is 114 13-year-old Nepalese swimmer Gaurika Singh. 115 Brazil is in a deep recession and 116 political crisis, while protests marred the arrival 117 of the Olympic torch in Rio on Wednesday. A 118 New Zealand jiu-jitsu athlete claims he was 119 kidnapped in Rio, while Chinese state media 120 criticised security after women fencers were 121 robbed and shooting team members found 122 "unauthorised payments" on their credit cards. 123 Brazil has drafted in 85,000 security personnel 124 from 55 countries who will be stationed at the 125 sport venues, Olympic Village, airports and 126 main roads - almost twice as many as were at 127 the 2012 London Olympics. There is also 128 200km of security fencing being used. More 129 than 500,000 tourists are expected to come to 130 the Games and organisers say more than one 131 million of the 7.5 million tickets remain unsold. 132 There have also been issues with the Olympic 133 Village and the sailing venue. When they did 138 eventually move in, the team were evacuated 139 for a small fire and returned to their rooms to 140 find essential equipment had been stolen. At 141 the sailing venue in Guanabara Bay, a 142 taskforce removed 25.4 tonnes of floating 143 rubbish during last year's Olympic test event. 144 But Rio officials admit they have failed to keep 145 up promises to clean the water and the 146 Associated Press says swallowing just three 147 teaspoons of water from the bay is likely to 148 lead to illness. This is not the first time a host 149 city has been criticised for its preparations, but 150 the IOC says Rio is now "ready to welcome the 151 world". http://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/369743 87
