Planetary Health and Human Well-Being Planetary health is based on the idea that human health depends on the stability of Earth’s natural systems. Clean air, safe water, fertile soil, biodiversity, and a stable climate are not only environmental concerns; they are also conditions that support food security, disease prevention, mental well-being, and social stability. In recent decades, human activities have placed increasing pressure on ecosystems through pollution, deforestation, intensive resource use, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions. These environmental changes may affect health in multiple ways, including respiratory diseases, heat-related illness, food and water insecurity, the spread of infectious diseases, and displacement caused by extreme weather events. However, planetary health does not treat human beings and nature as separate realities. Instead, it emphasizes interdependence: when ecosystems are degraded, human communities also become more vulnerable. This vulnerability is not distributed equally, since poorer populations often have fewer resources to adapt to environmental risks. For this reason, protecting human health requires more than medical treatment. It also requires sustainable policies, responsible consumption, environmental protection, and cooperation among health professionals, scientists, governments, and communities. In this perspective, caring for the planet becomes part of caring for people. Página 8 Adapted from: PLANETARY HEALTH ALLIANCE. What is Planetary Health? Boston: Planetary Health Alliance, 2025.
