Página 7 Rio 2016 will bring a taste of Brazil to host city 01 From food fairs to flashmobs, the best 02 of Brazil’s varied culture will be on display 03 during Rios 2016. While sport will take centre 04 stage, the rest of the city will be buzzing with 05 music, art and street performances as well as a 06 few surprises. 07 The cultural programme, known as 08 Celebra and organised by Rio 2016, 09 complements the line-up put on by Rio’s City 10 Hall to ensure there will be something for 11 everyone during the Games. After its success 12 earlier this year, there will be a food fair outside 13 the Deodoro event zone, where visitors can try 14 typical dishes from around Brazil including the 15 Amazonian soup tacacá and Bahian shrimp and 16 bean patties known as acarajé. 17 There are plans for flashmobs and 18 street art while Japanese artist Mariko Mori will 19 inaugurate her sculpture of a ring at the head of 20 a waterfall outside of Rio. “We want to show the 21 longevity of Brazilian culture and not just the 22 contemporaneity,” says Carla Camurati, Rio 23 2016’s head of culture. “The programme 24 involves a comprehensive record of Brazilian 25 culture, not just those that exist today but a 26 broader tribute to Brazilian culture.” 27 Ms Camurati said there would be small, 28 spontaneous activities along with larger events 29 like the launch of the official Rio 2016 posters. 30 The posters, which were designed by 13 artists, 31 were on display at the Museum of Tomorrow in 32 the regenerated port region before being moved 33 to Deodoro Park. “When you talk about 34 Brazilian culture, it’s so mixed, it’s so 35 interesting that it’s really good to have Brazil 36 represented in Rio, not just Rio’s culture,” Ms 37 Camurati adds. 38 The party in downtown Rio will begin on 39 3 August with a live screening of Brazil’s 40 opening football match against South Africa as 41 the Olympic Torch Relay arrives in the area with 42 a surprise show. And while the focus will be in 43 the port region, there will also be a range of 44 sports tournaments for children in the Olympic 45 Boulevard live sites in Parque Madureira and 46 Campo Grande. “They will be like big summer 47 camps,” said Antonio Pedro, Rio’s tourism 48 secretary. 49 Meanwhile, visitors will be able to pick 50 up a Cultural Passport for just R$15 to enjoy 51 free or discounted entry to 700 events put on 52 by the City Hall. The programme began in May 53 and will continue through September with 54 events taking place all over the city, including 55 joint performances by some of the city’s famous 56 samba schools and Carnival bands. “One of the 57 bonuses of the Olympics, as well as the sports 58 themselves, is the possibility that we have to 59 show our country and our city to the world,” 60 Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, says. 61 “And Rio de Janeiro has two main assets, which 62 are its natural beauty and the strength of his 63 people through cultural expressions. This 64 passport is a great opportunity to show this 65 diversity of Brazilian culture not only for those 66 who visit us, but also for many locals who often 67 end up not visiting cultural attractions. We want 68 people to experience the city at its maximum.” • https://www.olympic.org/news/rio-2016-will-bring-a-tasteof-brazil-to-host-city
