We tend 03 to be our own harshest critics, holding ourselves to unrealistic standards that leave us feeling 04 inadequate and unworthy when we fall short. This relentless pursuit of perfection affects our 05 mental and emotional health. An overwhelming amount of people struggle with negative self- 06 talk and body image issues, and the practice of self-compassion is the key to breaking this cycle. 07 Self-compassion is the act of treating ourselves with kindness, understanding, and 08 acceptance, especially in times of difficulty or when we make mistakes. It involves acknowledging 09 our flaws and imperfections without judgment, and extending to ourselves the same compassion 10 and care that we would offer to a friend. Dr. Kristin Neff, a leading researcher in the field, explains 11 self-compassion has three components: self-kindness, which involves responding to our own 12 pain with warmth and understanding instead of self-criticism; common humanity, which is the 13 consciousness that suffering and imperfection are universal experiences, so we’re not alone; and 14 mindfulness, that consists of being present in the moment and observing our thoughts and 15 emotions without judgment. 16 The first step in self-compassion is cultivating a sense of self-awareness. When you notice 17 you have engaged in self-critical thoughts, try to identify how they make you feel, if they were 18 triggered by something, and then try to reframe them with positive thoughts and self- 19 compassion. Take a step further by challenging the negative thoughts. Ask yourself if you would 20 speak to a friend in the same way, and if there is evidence behind your thoughts. Often, our 21 negative self-perceptions are based on distorted perceptions, generalizations, and past negative 22 experiences. 23 Be careful not to get caught in the comparison trap. Question social standards and 24 redefine your definitions of success and worthiness based on your personal goals. Celebrate your 25 individuality and drop the need to be perfect. Instead, adopt a mentality of progress over 26 perfection, perfection is unattainable. Remember to practice gratitude! Appreciate all the 27 incredible things your mind and body do for you. When faced with setbacks, look for the lessons 28 or growth opportunities. By doing so, you’ll shift your focus away from self-criticism towards one 29 of self-compassion and self-acceptance. Also, make sure you surround yourself with those who 30 celebrate and accept you for who you are. Take a quick inventory of those you spend the most 31 time with. Do you feel supported? Loved? Appreciated? If you don’t, it may be time to reevaluate 32 your relationships, and that may include a social media detox. 33 Learn to prioritize self-care. In our “go-go-go” society, self-care often gets neglected. But 34 when you prioritize self-care, you’re telling yourself that you’re deserving of care and nurturing. 35 Plus, by taking the time to listen to your mind and body, you can better identify when you’re 36 experiencing stress or burnout and take proactive steps to address it. Whether it’s __ nightly 37 yoga routine, __ weekly spa day, or __ mere 5-minutes of breathing in between meetings, find 38 something that fills your cup and works for you. Remember, it takes time and patience to 39 cultivate self-compassion, especially if you’ve spent years being self-critical. So, be gentle with 40 yourself throughout this process and celebrate each step forward, no matter how small! This is 41 a forever practice.
